Chapter 1
"Well your buddy Summers is gone," my Police Chief said to me on my first day back from a two week vacation. Before I had left for vacation, the Chief and I had discussed the termination possibility of a probationary Police Patrolman named John Edward Summers.
Now as I sat in the Chiefs office, we discussed the present situation. "So you went ahead and done it," I said to the Chief.
"I had to do it Ray. I couldn't wait any longer. I was getting complaints on him in here everyday and it just got too much for me to handle," he said to me.
"What kind of complaints? Were they any different than the ones that had come in on him before I went on vacation?"
The Chief leaned back in his large chair and said to me as he looked around his office. "You know very well what they were! You've heard them too, and you've taken a few of them. The same as I have."
I responded to the Chief by saying. "Yeah! You're right! I did have several come into me."
I listened as the Chief continued to explain his reasons for terminating the young patrolman. "I got complaints from motorist's people who live in the city and people who run these businesses here, and they were all about how rude this guy was all the time. He even called a couple of young girls 'no good whores' one night last week. Well those girls called one of the council members, and that was the call that did Mr. Summers in. Even the other guy's that was working with him started complaining about his loud vulgar mouth, and you know it's pretty bad when his own shift and the old Sergeant start to complain. So after all of this, I figured I didn't have any other choice than to get rid of him."
"I know these things happen Chief and I think you made the right decision," I said to him.
"You know something else Ray," the Chief said as he continued. "There is one thing that really bugs me about this guy. I don't really know what it is about him to cause me to feel this way, but I have a gut feeling that we haven't heard the last about Summers. I feel that there is a lot more going on in his life that we are not aware of and don't even suspect. But I think we are about to find out a lot about him and very soon."
"Well! It's over with now Chief," I said as I stood and prepared to leave his office.
"It may seem that way for now but I don't think it's over," he said as I left his office. I knew that the Chiefs years of experience had made him suspicious, but I didn't give too much thought to Summers or his future.
