The Broward Sheriff’s Office has a new leader for its Department of Law Enforcement but it’s not someone who is new to BSO.

Lt. Colonel Tim Gillette, whose BSO career spans more than 34 years, was selected by Sheriff Al Lamberti to serve as Executive Director of the Department of Law Enforcement. Lt. Col. Gillette was most recently in command of BSO’s Department of Personnel Services & Professional Standards and he replaces Col. Rick Frey who has retired after serving more than three decades.

During a brief swearing-in ceremony Monday afternoon (5/2/11) Sheriff Lamberti recalled that he and Tim Gillette have had careers that nearly ran parallel, each rising through the ranks and serving as deputies, sergeants, lieutenants, captains and majors at roughly the same times. Sheriff Lamberti said that Gillette started just one year before him, but at that time he was sufficiently experienced to be Rookie Deputy Lamberti’s Field Training Officer. “He taught me everything I know,” Sheriff Lamberti quipped at the ceremony.

As Executive Director of the Department of Law Enforcement, Lt. Col. Gillette has command over all BSO deputies and detectives who provide police services to 14 contract cities, the airport, seaport, courthouse and unincorporated areas, as well as any municipalities requesting assistance.

“I’d like to make a difference,” Lt. Col. Gillette said. “I want to continue serving the community in the most cost-effective and efficient way possible.”

Lt. Col. Gillette earned a Bachelors degree in Communications from the University of Florida and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from St. Thomas University. He attended the prestigious Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course and the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute of Police program. He is married with six children, including a foster child. His son Dennis is a BSO K-9 deputy.
