The Broward Sheriff’s Office Purchasing Department has earned recertification of the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP) Outstanding Agency Accreditation Award. The award recognizes excellence in public procurement and was first issued to BSO in June 2005.

“While the NIGP membership represents over 2,000 governmental agencies throughout the United States and Canada, only 114 governments have attained this distinction,” NIGP Chief Executive Officer Rick Grimm wrote in a letter to BSO. “Clearly, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Purchasing Bureau belongs to an elite group of purchasing organizations that represents the highest sustained standards of quality and efficiency in government.”

The award application is extensive with 132 questions in the following categories: mission and strategies, organization, authority and responsibility, planning and scheduling, standards and specifications, personnel and professional development, best practices, audit and evaluation, property management, cooperative procurement and procurement technology.

Agencies are accredited for three years by NIGP, Inc. and must reapply through the same process to continue their status.

Hello, this is Sheriff Al Lamberti. Many of you will be enjoying the Memorial Day weekend with BBQs and celebrations. As a reminder, if you are planning to consume alcohol, don’t drink and drive! BSO deputies will be out in force to ensure the safety of the motoring public this weekend as we do all year round. If you plan on consuming alcohol – designate a driver or take a cab. Also, please take a moment this weekend to remember those who are serving in the armed forces, especially those deployed overseas and away from their families – their sacrifice ensures our freedom. Although “Leadership Basics” have stayed the same, the 21st Century environment and market demand more. With an entirely new set of challenges for those who aspire to be leaders, or for those established leaders who simply wish to stay current, successful leadership requires a change of management mind sets, tool sets, and behavior sets.

Join us on Wednesday, May 25 at 5:30pm as our guest speaker, Phillip Reinke, founder of the Continuous Improvement Institute and one of thirty original GE Blackbelts/ Master Blackbelts, sets the stage for leaders to understand what it will take to go from simply surviving to thriving.

Marvin Stoner Broward Sheriff's Office

Marvin Stoner

Sheriff Al Lamberti has chosen Marvin Stoner, a dedicated and experienced Broward Sheriff’s Office commander, to serve as chief of BSO’s Parkland District. Stoner will replace former chief Paul O’Connell who retired recently to become the Wilton Manors Police Chief.

Stoner, 62, will assume command of the Parkland District Saturday, May 13. His swearing-in ceremony will be at 7 p.m. May 18th at Parkland City Hall.

Stoner started his law enforcement career in 1971 with the Maryland State Police. He had various duties with the agency including serving on the SWAT team as a counter sniper, administering breathalyzer tests, using radar to stop speeders and doing vehicle inspections. He never realized when he visited a friend in Florida in 1984 that he would like the weather so much, move here and eventually embark upon a second law enforcement career that would span nearly a quarter century.

In 1987, he was hired by the Cooper City Police Department. He worked on road patrol and was promoted to sergeant in 1990. As a sergeant, he worked in the detective and youth services bureau, as well as road patrol, and was promoted to captain in 1995. The department merged with the Broward Sheriff’s Office in February 2004. Stoner was then named Commander and Executive Officer to the chief. He has a bachelor’s degree in Professional Studies from Barry University.

“Cooper City has been a wonderful home to me for nearly 25 years, but I am looking forward to getting to know the people of Parkland and working with the city leaders and personnel in BSO’s Parkland district office,” Stoner said.

Parkland is an 11-square-mile, mostly residential community in northwest Broward County. BSO has been providing law enforcement services to Parkland residents since March 2004. The district has an annual operating budget of approximately $4 million, which provides for 33 positions including one district chief, one lieutenant, four sergeants, 24 deputies and other positions.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office will hold a dual event Saturday morning at Lauderdale Lakes City Hall. The event will include a prescription drug “take back” and a Shred-A-Thon.

9 a.m. – noon Saturday, May 14
Lauderdale Lakes City Hall

4300 NW 36th Street, Lauderdale Lakes

The prescription drug take back program, operating under the name Operation Medicine Cabinet, allows participants to turn in unused or expired prescription medication to receive a $5.00 gift card (while supplies last).
The Shred-A-Thon provides residents with a safe way to dispose of their personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other paperwork that contains sensitive information. The service is free of charge. There’s a limit of five boxes per person.

Following very successful years of Shred-A-Thons from 2008 – 2010, during which tens of thousands pounds of documents were shredded, BSO and the Office of the Florida Attorney General are committed to continue helping the community fight identity theft by inviting them to shred their old documents.

The Shred-A-Thon events began in Broward County in May 2008, as a joint initiative by Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti and the Florida Attorney General’s Office, with the assistance of UNISHRED and The National Association of TRIADS.

For more information on the Shred-A-Thon, please call (954) 321-4100. For more information about the prescription drug “take back” event or prescription drug prevention presentations, contact BSO’s External Affairs Division at (954) 831-8902.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office has a new leader for its Department of Law Enforcement but it’s not someone who is new to BSO.

Lt. Colonel Tim Gillette, whose BSO career spans more than 34 years, was selected by Sheriff Al Lamberti to serve as Executive Director of the Department of Law Enforcement. Lt. Col. Gillette was most recently in command of BSO’s Department of Personnel Services & Professional Standards and he replaces Col. Rick Frey who has retired after serving more than three decades.

During a brief swearing-in ceremony Monday afternoon (5/2/11) Sheriff Lamberti recalled that he and Tim Gillette have had careers that nearly ran parallel, each rising through the ranks and serving as deputies, sergeants, lieutenants, captains and majors at roughly the same times. Sheriff Lamberti said that Gillette started just one year before him, but at that time he was sufficiently experienced to be Rookie Deputy Lamberti’s Field Training Officer. “He taught me everything I know,” Sheriff Lamberti quipped at the ceremony.

As Executive Director of the Department of Law Enforcement, Lt. Col. Gillette has command over all BSO deputies and detectives who provide police services to 14 contract cities, the airport, seaport, courthouse and unincorporated areas, as well as any municipalities requesting assistance.

“I’d like to make a difference,” Lt. Col. Gillette said. “I want to continue serving the community in the most cost-effective and efficient way possible.”

Lt. Col. Gillette earned a Bachelors degree in Communications from the University of Florida and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from St. Thomas University. He attended the prestigious Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course and the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute of Police program. He is married with six children, including a foster child. His son Dennis is a BSO K-9 deputy.

DATE: Thursday, May 5, 2011 11:30 a.m.

LOCATION: In front of the Ron Cochran Public Safety Building 2601 West Broward Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale

Sheriff Al Lamberti and the men and women of the Broward Sheriffs Office will unite with millions of Americans Thursday for a National Day of Prayer.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of this national observance. In keeping with this year’s theme, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” several religious leaders from varied denominations will lead the BSO in prayer, focusing on the seven centers of power: government, military, media, business, education, church and family. The annual event, which was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman in 1952, is observed the first Thursday in May.

“On this 60th anniversary of the National Day of Prayer, I’m honored to join with the millions of people throughout America who rely on prayer for strength and support,” said Sheriff Lamberti.

Thursday’s ceremony will start at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Public Safety Building. The BSO Honor Guard will present the colors, and Sheriff Lamberti will welcome those in attendance, followed by prayers for America.
